About the Holistic Sleep Coaching Program

The Holistic Sleep Coaching Program is the most comprehensive, evidence based, responsive sleep coach education in the world. Holistic sleep support is not just about a bedtime routine, black out blinds and a list of sleep rules. The sleep world is changing and parents are increasingly looking for 100% responsive, gentle, compassionate and effective practitioners whose practice is rooted in evidence. Sleep is affected by our genetics, epigenetics, health, nutrition, microbiome, senses, physical ability and mobility, development and growth.

It’s also affected by our relationships, attachments and responsiveness, psychology, social interaction, parents, siblings, family, peers and community. It’s affected by mental health and the wider constructs of family and culture. It’s affected by stress, context, play, activity levels, exercise and social support.

That’s before you get anywhere near the way sleep works, sleep biology, sleep hygiene or sleep techniques, and of course, it assumes an understanding of normal sleep patterns and variations. Holistic sleep coaching is a completely different way of thinking about sleep, that accounts for the many variables which influence it. This matters because trying to improve sleep in a generic or behavioural way without considering the root causes is likely to miss the mark. We teach our students to consider all of these aspects simultaneously, supporting the families they work with in a 100% responsive, evidence-based, family-centred and creative way

Origins and Purpose

I first got interested in sleep before my kids came along, so we’re going back to 2007 when I was training to be a health visitor. I immediately realised that the big question everyone had was SLEEP. I tried to access training, but there really wasn’t much. I did some training in safe sleep, and attachment, and responsive feeding, and gentle parenting…. and I also accessed basic sleep courses that gave a range of about 5 different techniques.

None of this was integrated by the way. I tried to read about it – but though there were clinical sleep pathology books and sleep training books, there was nothing that pulled together how sleep is affected by development, psychology, relationships, attachment, nutrition, feeding, health, sensory integration, social development, stress, play, and all the other nuances. So I wrote the book. I looked for courses –

but at the time, there were only basic sleep courses, and they were based in a mainstream sleep training paradigm – which focuses on the child’s sleep being a problem that we fix with behavioural interventions (largely separation based). That wasn’t doing it for me.
So I wrote the course too. I guess I realised that I couldn’t do anything about the fact that sleep training culture is rife by whining about it. But what I *could* do was try to change it from the inside. I’ve been running the Holistic Sleep Coaching Program alongside my friend and business partner Emma for 5 brilliant years and we are unbelievably proud to have trained more than 600 brilliant people.

Who is it for?

You’re passionate about sleep. Perhaps you worked in a related industry before, or maybe this is all new to you. But one thing is for sure, sleep has captured your brain.

I’ve worked with hundreds of people who worked as clinicians, counsellors, doctors, teachers, doulas, lactation specialists, early years professionals or pregnancy and birth workers who realise sleep was the missing piece of the puzzle. I’ve also worked with hundreds of folks who worked as lawyers, accountants, PR experts, media, hospitality, creative arts and so much more who just couldn’t conceive of the idea of going back to their corporate world after the life-changing moment of having their own family.

Maybe you struggled with sleep and want to support others who have also struggled. Perhaps you had a difficult experience with mainstream sleep training and don’t want that for others. Or perhaps you had incredible support from an awesome sleep coach and want to be that for someone else. If this is where you are, and you can see yourself building a new business around genuinely compassionate, science-backed, attachment-focused, family-centred, holistic sleep coaching, then we’d love to be part of your story.
