Paediatric-focused breastfeeding training for hospital staff
Looking to upskill your paediatric multidisciplinary team with up to date, evidence-based, paediatric-specificbreastfeeding training?
Almost all currently available breastfeeding training focuses on the establishment of breastfeeding in healthy newborns, addressing common breastfeeding concerns in the healthy dyad, and initiating a milk supply for preterm neonates. This is mostly due to a huge gap in the available literature, with only a fraction of research dedicated to breastfeeding challenges in paediatric population, as opposed to the neonatal, maternity or community populations.
Dr Lyndsey Hookway has been campaigning and advocating for better, paediatric-specific breastfeeding training for more than a decade. Her doctoral thesis explored the challenges of medically complex infants in depth, and she has published several articles following her research with sick children and their families.
“Dr Hookway is a wonderful speaker, passionate researcher, and worthy advocate for this research agenda.”
Mark Gatto
Asst. Professor: Critical Organisation Studies
Her research has found that medically complex infants and children in paediatrics experience unique and difficult challenges that are distinct from the well-known issues in better researched populations, and therefore, mainstream breastfeeding training that has focused on healthy term and preterm infants does not necessarily meet the needs of children in paediatrics. She is regularly contacted by maternity or neonatal infant feeding leads to provide support or guidance for older breastfed sick children, or children who are admitted with conditions unfamiliar to infant feeding specialists who work in the maternity setting.
Lyndsey is a paediatric nurse, health visitor, IBCLC, researcher and experienced international speaker and uses a variety of interactive methods to ensure your team is engaged, interested and equipped with actionable new information and skills, whether the training is in-person or remote.
She can deliver 1 or 2-day training, short workshops or bespoke teaching to meet the needs of your department.
Training available includes:
- 1-day basic paediatric breastfeeding training for those who have no prior breastfeeding knowledge
- 1-day advanced paediatric breastfeeding training for those who have prior breastfeeding knowledge which has mainly focused on initiating breastfeeding in the healthy term infant, troubleshooting common breastfeeding problems or establishing a milk supply in preterm neonates
- 2-day paediatric breastfeeding training which caters for a mixed skill audience
- ½ day workshops on specific paediatric breastfeeding skills
- Masterclasses on:
- family centred care approaches to breastfeeding support,
- the importance of breastfeeding for sick children,
